Will using an independent shop void my car's warranty?

Short answer

No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer can't void your warranty just because maintenance or repairs were done by an independent shop or with non-dealer parts. What matters is that the maintenance follows the manufacturer's schedule with appropriate parts and fluids, and that you keep records. Warranty repairs and recalls themselves are still done by the dealer, at no charge to you.

What the law says

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a federal law enforced by the Federal Trade Commission. In plain terms:

  • You don't have to use the dealer for maintenance to keep your warranty.
  • A manufacturer can't require you to use brand-name parts unless they provide those parts free.
  • A warranty claim can be denied only if the manufacturer shows that the non-dealer work or part actually caused the problem.

What to do to stay covered

  1. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, or your car's maintenance reminder.
  2. Use the right fluids and parts: oil viscosity and specification, coolant type, transmission fluid and so on.
  3. Keep every invoice, with dates and mileage.

Dealer vs independent, honestly

Dealers are the right place for warranty repairs, recalls and some software updates. For maintenance and out-of-warranty repairs, a qualified independent shop gives you the same schedule and quality of parts, often with more time to explain what's going on. Many drivers use both: the dealer for recalls, an independent shop for everything else.

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
I always went to the dealer to get service on our vehicles. But lately, I got the feeling that the dealer was recommending unnecessary work… Today I bring my wife's Lincoln MKZ Hybrid for 100k miles of service.

Took my Cadillac wagon in for a 70,000 mile service. Had it back early the same day. Their shop is clean and well organized.

More questions

Can a manufacturer deny a warranty claim because I used aftermarket parts?

Only if they can show the aftermarket part or improper work caused the failure. They can't deny coverage just because a non-original part is on the car.

What records should I keep?

Dated invoices showing the mileage, the work done and the parts and fluids used. We provide a detailed invoice for each visit.

Does the same apply to leased cars?

Generally yes for maintenance, but check your lease agreement for any return-condition requirements.

What about recalls?

Recalls are always performed by a dealer at no charge. You can check for open recalls on your vehicle with your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
